Arts Practice & Cultural Development
At Side by Side we believe that arts and culture are vital aspects of community and social development. Our work in community development and health has taught us that using creative methods and supporting cultural development leads to improved social and personal well-being.
We support arts and cultural development projects through:
- Planning and implementation of community cultural development projects.
- Collaborating with community and private sector organisations to develop local arts activities.
- Supporting the use of creative methods in community projects.
- Project management of community cultural development initiatives.
- Evaluation of community cultural development projects.
- Providing resources, links and networks to communities and private sector organisations interested in undertaking community cultural development projects.
Some work we’ve been involved with in this area includes:
In 2007 Maya Haviland worked with DADAA (Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts Australia) in the development and implementation of MarshARTabilities, a community arts celebration of place and community in Derby, WA.
Collaborating with Jalaris Aboriginal Corporation on the Derby Photo Me! Project, a participatory photography project working with young Indigenous women in Derby, Western Australia, and the Singing Out book making project, a collaborative bookmaking project about Indigenous women’s experiences of education.
Planning and implementation with Kimberley TAFE of the Mowanjum TAFE Youth Program, an engagement program for dis-engaged young people based on digital media and cultural documentation.
